Thanks to the development of information technologies, almost every resident of Russia has the opportunity to find a participant in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945 by last name. There are dedicated resources to assist in the search for missing soldiers and health veterans.
Instructions
Step 1
Try to find a participant in the Great Patriotic War by last name using one of the thematic sites, the links to which are located below. To get started, you can simply study the documents posted here and excerpts from various archives with data on those killed and missing during the war, as well as the fate of those who were able to survive.
Step 2
Perform a more detailed search using a special electronic questionnaire. Indicate in the appropriate fields the name, surname and patronymic of the participant of the Second World War. If you know additional information, for example, years of service and rank, the soldier of the order and medals, indicate them too. Even if your initial search fails, don't despair. The databases on such sites are periodically updated. Also, try to search for information about a person using Internet search engines (Google, Yandex, etc.). It is enough to enter the name and surname of the veteran, as well as any additional information to get links to sites with information about him.
Step 3
You can try to find a participant in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945 by last name through the consolidated database "Memorial" of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation, posted on its website (link is below). There is also a questionnaire for filling out information about the warrior. As a result, you will be able to find out information about the fate of the soldier, taken from the surviving copies of the "Reports of Irrecoverable Loss". Any information obtained may prove useful in conducting further searches.
Step 4
Contact the military registration and enlistment office at the place of conscription of a participant in the Great Patriotic War to find him by name and surname. Write a statement asking for information about the soldier, indicating your degree of kinship and all the information known about him. After that, expect a response from the military commissariat.
Step 5
If your searches still do not return positive results, contact the Central Archives of the Ministry of Defense, which is located in the city of Podolsk. It is enough to send a letter to the address of the institution with a request to provide information about the missing participant in the Great Patriotic War. After a while, you should receive an answer with information about the place of burial of the soldier or his current place of residence, if the veteran is in good health.
Step 6
If you receive an answer such as "Died of wounds" or "Died in captivity" without accompanying information, you can write a letter to the FSB and request information about the person from the archives or to the Military Medical Museum of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation, located in St. Petersburg.
