As an experienced military intelligence officer, Vladimir Kvachkov perfectly knows the methods of work of special forces and methods of armed struggle. These skills became one of the reasons for bringing charges against the former GRU colonel of attempted murder of Anatoly Chubais and of organizing a military mutiny.
From the biography of Vladimir Kvachkov
The future GRU colonel Kvachkov was born on August 5, 1948 in the village of Kraskino, in the Primorsky Territory. In 1958, Vladimir entered the Suvorov School. Eight years later he became a cadet of the Kiev Higher Combined Arms School.
Four years later, after graduating from a military university, Kvachkov took command of a platoon in a special purpose brigade located in Pskov. Then he served in a special-purpose brigade as part of a group of Soviet troops in the GDR. After that, the military fate threw the officer into the Trans-Baikal Military District.
Later, the officer continued his military education. In 1981, Vladimir Vasilyevich graduated with honors from the Frunze Military Academy. After that he was sent to serve in the intelligence department of the Leningrad Military District.
The further military career of Kvachkov was somehow connected with the special forces and the GRU. The officer fought in Afghanistan, and after the collapse of the great Soviet power he took part in hostilities in Azerbaijan and Tajikistan.
There is information that after completing combat missions, Kvachkov switched to work in one of the research institutions of the Russian military department. In 1998, Colonel Kvachkov completed his service and went to the reserve. After that, he worked at the Center for Military-Strategic Research of the RF Ministry of Defense. Here he defended his Ph. D. thesis on the forms of the use of special intelligence forces.
Criminal prosecution
In March 2005, Vladimir Kvachkov was detained in order to investigate the case of an attempt on the life of Anatoly Chubais, who was then the head of RAO UES of Russia. The incident itself took place on March 17, 2005. Chubais's car was heading for Moscow when a controlled charge exploded next to him. Chubais's security car was fired upon.
Kvachkov turned out to be the prime suspect. Explosives were found in his house during a search. The retired GRU colonel himself refused to testify in the case. Subsequently, in the framework of the criminal case, two more former special forces soldiers were detained. The main version of the assassination attempt: an ideological conspiracy.
However, there was no direct evidence against Kvachkov. In June 2008, the jury issued an acquittal in this high-profile case. The court could not prove the involvement of the accused. The defendants were released from custody. Two months later, the country's Supreme Court overturned the acquittal. The case was sent to the court for reconsideration.
The new court left the previous court decision unchanged. However, in December 2010, Kvachkov was arrested. He was accused of preparing an armed rebellion and involving other citizens in terrorist activities. The investigation and the state prosecution managed to prove the guilt of the retired colonel.
In February 2013, Kvachkov was sentenced to thirteen years in prison. Then this period was lowered to 8 years. Kvachkov celebrated his 70th birthday in captivity.
The personal life of Vladimir Vasilyevich was more successful than his fate after the end of the service. Kvachkov created a family twice. From his first marriage, he has two daughters and a son. In the second marriage, fate also pleased the colonel, giving him another son.
