Be sure you are well versed in at least one area. Learn politeness and etiquette, in no case behave rudely in society and do not use foul language. It is also best to avoid parasitic words in speech.

Be a good and attentive listener if you feel like you can't be smart in conversation. Give your interlocutors the opportunity to speak, and just listen, agreeing with them and periodically inserting a few words into the conversation.
