Environmental activists from the international environmental organization Greenpeace, dressed as polar bears, visited the office of the oil and gas company Shell on July 19 without warning and installed a capsule with artificial snow in the room. This is how Greenpeace protested against oil wells being drilled in the Arctic.
Thus, the environmental organization is trying to attract public attention and thwart the company's plans to develop oil wells on the Arctic shelf. Greenpeace ecologists are confident that such a rude intervention could provoke a spill of huge oil reserves, similar to what happened in the Gulf of Mexico through the fault of BP.
About 20 people took part in the action. They also infiltrated the Royal Datch-Shell headquarters near Paris in the morning. The Greens barricaded the entrance to the building to prevent police and Shell employees from entering. A capsule with artificial snow was installed on the top floor of an office building, snow was scattered on the floors and tables in all rooms, and the activists left black prints of bear paws on the floor and glass. A few hours later, the police entered the building, almost all of the participants were arrested.
On the official website of ecologists it is specified that the action was carried out within the framework of the Save the Arctic movement.
The Shell office visited by the polar bears is located in Colombes, Haute Seine, near Paris, France. In addition, similar actions by Greenpeace were held in other countries - in the offices and gas stations of this oil and gas company.
So, in Hamburg, at the station, a three-meter copy of an oil rig was installed, black liquid flowed from its top onto artificial ice. In the UK, activists disguised as polar bears have deactivated fuel pumps at more than 70 Shell gas stations.
In the same week, "greens" with a capsule of artificial snow visited Shell headquarters in The Hague, the Netherlands, and also picketed around 40 gas stations in Germany.
As stated on the official website of Greenpeace, the protests will continue as long as "the fleet of Arctic destroyers is heading towards one of the last untouched places on Earth."
