Starting conditions
The sphere of scientific interests of each particular researcher is determined by his initial training. Mikhail Anatolyevich Chlenov was born on September 26, 1940 in a family of scientific intelligentsia. Parents lived in Moscow. My father knew several foreign languages and worked as a journalist and translator in one of the capital's publishing houses. Mother, Nina Aleksandrovna Dmitrieva, majoring in art critic, historian and art theorist. When the war began, the head of the family went to the front, and Mikhail and his mother were evacuated to the deep rear.
When the war ended, his father took five-year-old Misha to his home in Germany, where he served in the Soviet administration of the city of Weimar. During his three years in a foreign country, the future candidate of historical sciences perfectly mastered the German language. Returning to his homeland, Mikhail graduated from high school and decided to get a specialized education at the Institute of Oriental Languages at Moscow State University. Members chose Indonesian as their primary language. In accordance with current regulations, a fifth-year student was sent for a two-year internship in the tropical country of Indonesia.
Professional activity
In 1965, having received a diploma in the specialty "orientalist-historian", Chlenov entered the graduate school of the Institute of Ethnography. At the Academic Council, the research topic was determined for the graduate student. Mikhail Anatolyevich was offered to conduct research in the northern regions of the country. There was no systematized information about the way of life of the peoples of the North at that time. On an expedition to Taimyr or Chukotka, it was allowed to travel without any restrictions. From each trip, ethnographers brought invaluable material that opened new pages in the history of the northern territories.
Based on the results obtained, Chlenov wrote over a hundred scientific and educational articles. From under his pen were published the books "Antiquities of the Senyavin Strait Island" and "Whale Alley". In the mid-70s, Mikhail Anatolyevich, in between expeditions to the North, actively participated in the activities of the independent Jewish movement. Beginning in 1981, the Jewish Historical and Ethnographic Commission began to operate in the Soviet Union. Members were among the founders of this commission.
Recognition and privacy
The scientific career of Mikhail Chlenov was quite successful. He is a professor at the Faculty of Philology of the famous Institute of Asia and Africa. In his free time from public affairs, he is engaged in literary creativity.
Little is known about the personal life of the scientist and public figure. He was married twice. In total, he has six children. Wives and children live in Israel. Mikhail Anatolyevich prefers to spend most of his time in Moscow.
