To obtain a second citizenship, it is not required to renounce the citizenship of the native country only if the legislation of both states provides for such a possibility.
The legislation of some countries provides for the simultaneous possession of citizenship by individuals of several states. At the same time, the countries must have signed an appropriate treaty or agreement on the settlement of all issues related to dual citizenship.
The most common case is dual citizenship received by children of parents who are citizens of different states.
France
In this country, the existence of a second citizenship is not prohibited by law. The attitude towards the holder of dual citizenship is the same as towards the native of France. Therefore, the same legal provisions apply to it.
Italy
The dual citizenship law allows native Italians to acquire citizenship of another state. When applying for Italian citizenship, a person is not required to renounce the citizenship of the previous country of residence. It is worth noting that the law of Italy enshrines the right not only of dual, but also of multiple citizenship. However, due to the many bureaucratic procedures, it can take more than 10 years to obtain an Italian passport.
South Korea
Since 2010, the authorities of this republic have allowed persons applying for Korean citizenship not to renounce the citizenship of another country.
Germany
First of all, the authorities of this country provide for the availability of German citizenship as a second for someone who is an ethnic German living outside Germany. Dual citizenship is also possible in cases where renunciation of citizenship of another country for various reasons is impossible.
Ireland
A foreigner can obtain Irish citizenship if he has lived in this country for more than five years. Also, those who are married to an Irish citizen have this right. Although Irish law does not prohibit dual citizenship, not all countries have a corresponding treaty with Ireland.
USA
Historically, the United States has been home to a large number of immigrants. Therefore, the US authorities decided not to prohibit residents of the "country of immigrants" from having citizenship of other states. As far as obtaining US citizenship is concerned, a foreigner can legally become a US citizen if one of their parents is born in the United States.
Australia
Australian law does not prohibit residents of the country from holding dual citizenship. Foreigners wishing to become Australian citizens must have continuously resided in this country for at least two years.
