The Russian Imperial Guard arose from the Semenovsky and Preobrazhensky regiments in 1687, during the reign of Peter I. However, in 1918 it was disbanded. Only during the Great Patriotic War, the guard was recreated again.
The title "Guards" was given to military units, ships and other subdivisions of the Soviet Armed Forces, which distinguished themselves in battles during the Great Patriotic War. The military formation passed the guards banner, and the personnel received a breastplate, marking the guards rank. The Guard was the elite, privileged, well-trained and equipped part of the troops. She was the core of the army. It is not surprising that the armed detachments, which were directly under the monarch, served as the personal guard of the sovereign.
The Day of the Russian Guard was established on December 22, 2000 in accordance with presidential decree No. 2032 "On the establishment of the Day of the Russian Guard" as a tribute to the three hundredth anniversary of the Russian Guard and for the revival of Russian military traditions, as well as increasing the authority of military service.
