Mavlet Batirov is not very tall. But in spirit he is a hero and a fearless fighter, a master of free-style wrestling. The Dagestan champion performed successfully at the highest level competitions. He is a two-time Olympic champion. But after surgery, Mavlet's results declined. Batirov strictly adheres to the norms of Islam, diligently studies the Koran, the Arabic language.
From the sports biography of M. Batirov
The future wrestler and Olympic champion was born in Khasavyurt (Dagestan) on December 12, 1983. From an early age, the father took his son to wrestling competitions. Mavlet first came to the gym as a seven-year-old child. At the age of ten, Batirov had already won first place in the youth tournament in Khasavyurt. This was his first competition and his first major victory. Coach S. Umakhanov immediately noticed a talented guy and predicted a great future for him.
Since 2003, Batirov has been a member of the Russian national team. He played for the army club.
After the Beijing Olympics, Batirov had his gallbladder removed. After that, doctors did not recommend the wrestler to lose weight. The pause in the competition lasted for a couple of years. Then Mavlet moved to a different category, up to 66 kg. Health difficulties did not allow Batirov to take part in the Olympics, which were held on the banks of the Thames. Then the athlete was 28 years old.
However, Mavlet Alavdinovich successfully performed at Russian-level competitions: in 2011 he took silver at the Russian championship. He conceded only to his brother, who is younger in age than Mavlet. At the World Cup held in Turkey, Batirov was left without medals.
In general, the track record of the famous Dagestan wrestler looks very solid. Over the years of his sports career, Mavlet collected two highest medals of the Olympics (2004 and 2008). He is the world champion, bronze medalist of the 2006 World Cup. Repeatedly Batirov received medals at the championships of Russia and Europe.
Outside of sports life
In conversations with journalists, Mavlet admitted that he fulfills all the norms of Islam. He even interrupts training when it is necessary to perform namaz. Batirov advocates strict religious practices for women. Mavlet believes that they must wear a hijab and refuse to use cosmetics.
In the fall of 2012, in Makhachkala, operatives detained two dozen parishioners of a mosque where they were learning Arabic. Mavlet Batirov was also among the detainees. The reason for the detention was not disclosed by the law enforcement agencies. The press service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs explained that it was about the implementation of "operational information". After the trial, the detainees were released, having previously established their identity, photographed and fingerprinted.
Later, journalists found out that the champion was suspected of having close ties with extremists. It is also known that adherents of Wahhabism and radical Islam gather in the mosque that Batirov likes to visit. Security officials consider such meetings a hotbed for extremist ideas.
Mavlet's father, in an interview with reporters, denied his son's adherence to the ideas of radical Islam. According to him, the son goes to the mosque to pray and improve his knowledge of the Arabic language. Batirov Sr. never noticed that Mavlet was doing anything reprehensible.
Mavlet Batirov is married and happy with his personal life. Together with his wife, he brings up a daughter. The wrestler received his education at the Dagestan State University.
