Biography: early years
Stepan Mailovich Maryanyan was born on September 21, 1991 in the village of Dinskaya, near Krasnodar. His father brought him to sports. When Stepan was 9 years old, he began to attend the Greco-Roman wrestling section in the village. At first, he did not like this sport because of the heavy loads. Stepan in every possible way resisted classes, ran away from training ahead of time.
However, his father did not allow him to quit sports. In Armenian families, the parent's word is law, so Stepan continued training. Later, in an interview, he will note that he is grateful to his father for not letting him quit sports. By the age of 11, Stepan was involved in the training process and could no longer live without Greco-Roman wrestling.
As a teenager, Maryanyan actively participated in various competitions of both city and regional significance. In his piggy bank during that period, several dozen medals of various denominations.
Career
The 2012 Russian Cup was Stepan's first successful competition among adults. Then he took second place, which was very happy. In the same year, Maryanyan took silver in the Grand Prix dedicated to the memory of the famous wrestler Ivan Poddubny. In the same season, Stepan became the third in the Russian Greco-Roman wrestling championship.
The next year was very successful for Maryanyan. He won gold at two significant tournaments: the Grand Prix of Ivan Poddubny and the World Cup. At the Russian championship and the European Nations Cup, Stepan was third.
Throughout 2014, Maryanyan did not compete due to injury. The next season, he became the champion of the European Olympic Games, which were held in Baku. In an interview, the athlete admitted that that victory was the most memorable for him.
In 2017, Stepan was already the "solid" number one in the up to 60 kg weight category in the Russian national Greco-Roman wrestling team. He started the season with third place at the Ivan Poddubny Grand Prix. In the spring he won the World Cup, and in the summer he became the champion of the country for the first time and guaranteed himself a place in the national team for the upcoming championship of the planet.
Maryanyan went to the world championship, which was held in Paris, to win, but he lost one fight and eventually became the third. Stepan dedicated his "bronze" to Russia. Three months later, he won the European Cup of Nations.
In the summer of 2019, Maryanyan repeated the success in Baku four years ago, once again becoming the winner of the European Games. Now all the thoughts of the athlete are busy preparing for the Tokyo Olympics.
Personal life
Stepan Maryanyan tries not to advertise his family. On his social networks, you can see only pictures from training and competitions. However, in an interview, the athlete said that he has a wife and a little daughter.
