Russia is famous for its Kremlin. Of course, the most famous is the Moscow Kremlin. But there are still many buildings in the country that are ready to compete with the capital's handsome man. Almost every ancient Russian city can be proud of its fortification. But not everywhere historical monuments have been preserved in a decent form.
The heritage of the Moscow region
In the Moscow region, the Kremlin in good condition can be seen in Kolomna. Of course, it was after restoration, but inside it is now an excellent tourist place, although the walls of the Kremlin have been partially preserved. And if you drive a little further in the same direction to Zaraisk, you can admire the Zaraisk Kremlin. So far, this is the only Kremlin in the Moscow region that has been preserved in its original form. The rest of the buildings, for example, in Volokolamsk or Verey, have come down to us in part. And only separate elements remained from the majestic walls. But the internal buildings can still be found here and there.
In total, there are nine kremlin in the Moscow region, which form a symbolic ring around Moscow. In Dmitrov, only internal buildings with a white Assumption Cathedral remained. In Zvenigorod, only a high rampart remained of the wooden fortifications. The brick walls of the Mozhaisk Kremlin were dismantled, and St. Nicholas Cathedral, towering on a hill, reminds of its former greatness. And the walls of the Serpukhov Kremlin in Soviet times were used to build the Moscow metro. Bulk fortifications have survived in Ruza, although they can be called the Kremlin conditionally.
Tula Kremlin
And if you go further through Russian cities, you can see truly unique buildings. Take, for example, the ancient Tula Kremlin. Tula is a very attractive tourist city because of its very well preserved historical monuments. Of course, it was not done without restoration work, but they were carried out very carefully. And the Tula Detinets is a good example of this. All nine towers of the Tula Kremlin have their own names. Inside, two cathedrals have survived - the Assumption and the Epiphany. The latter was built in honor of the victory over Napoleon in the Patriotic War of 1812.
Kazan miracle
For those who are looking for a unique fortress, there is a direct road to Kazan. After all, the Kazan Kremlin is included in the UNESCO Heritage List. This is not just a Kremlin, it is a whole large complex of fortifications and monasteries on the banks of the river. On the territory of the Kremlin there are museums and exhibition halls, a mosque, and a governor's palace. Yes, you can't list everything - you have to see it. Kazan is one of the three most beautiful cities in Russia for a reason.
Fans of long trips should definitely visit Pskov, Nizhny Novgorod, Tobolsk, Smolensk, Veliky Novgorod, Astrakhan. What unites these cities? Of course, the presence of a fortress. Moreover, the Kremlin is well preserved here and is a whole architectural and historical complex. Moreover, the Kremlin in Tobolsk is the only one in the whole of Siberia. After all, there was no need to build defensive fortifications here, and the Kremlin was rather an administrative building.
By the way, in our time, fortresses are still being built. Of course, not for defense, but for beauty. For example, the Kremlin was built in Yoshkar-Ola. They also supplemented the square with a copy of the Kremlin's Spasskaya Tower and St. Basil's Cathedral. Well, copying is the best form of flattery.
