The mystery of human death is covered with mysticism. This event of a person's existence, to the extent of people's misunderstanding, can be influenced by various popular superstitions. Under funeral superstition can be called grandmother's folklore related to funeral traditions.
Most of the funerary superstitions came to us from the time of post-revolutionary Russia and are now tenaciously entrenched in the minds of the Russian people.
The most common funerary superstition is the tradition of leaving bread and water (vodka) to the deceased until the fortieth day so that the deceased can eat and drink. A very common practice is to curtain mirrors and TVs. The origins of superstition are the time of Soviet power. Sometimes you can see that the doors of the house or apartment in which the body is located are open. This is to make it easier for the soul to get out. Naturally, in the Christian tradition, such concepts of the soul are not accepted to the extent of its immateriality.
There are also superstitious rules of conduct in front of the coffin of the deceased. For example, some believe that leaving the room with the deceased should only be done backwards. There is a tradition to go around the coffin three times with a lit candle in hand in order to dispel negative energy. All these rules are meaningless in the Christian sense.
There are superstitious signs that if the coffin is not made in size, then surely, soon, there will be another deceased. Therefore, until now, some people can order a much larger coffin just in case.
Some adhere to the practice of placing coins and even cigarettes in a coffin in order to buy a place in paradise for the soul and smoke along the way, if a person smoked during his lifetime. But at the same time, a superstitious tradition prohibits burying a person with an icon.
It should be noted that all these superstitions have nothing to do with the Christian religion.
