NATO, otherwise known as the North Atlantic Alliance, is an organization that brings together countries based on common military and political interests. To join it, the government of any state must follow a certain legal procedure.
Instructions
Step 1
Contact the NATO Council to include your country in this organization. The preliminary stage will be military cooperation, for example, conducting joint exercises.
Step 2
Sign the NATO Membership Action Plan (MAP) when your application is approved. It is compiled for each country individually, but it includes a number of standard mandatory conditions. These include the settlement of various territorial disputes with neighboring countries. Also, the control system of the armed forces should become more open and democratic. For this, the post of defense minister must be held by a civilian specialist. And for successful joint interaction with the forces of the alliance, the army of the country joining NATO must comply with modern standards of personnel training, as well as have modern weapons.
Step 3
If there are military formations of another state on the territory of the country, decide on their withdrawal. This is also required by NATO, since, by joining this organization, the state should no longer militarily help and rely on countries outside the North Atlantic bloc.
Step 4
After fulfilling all the terms of the agreement, send a letter to the NATO Council. After that, the organization must ratify the treaty for your country to become a member of the Alliance. If the negotiations are successful, submit the necessary documents to the parliament of your state. After he approves the entry into force of the document, it must be signed by the head of the country - the president or, in some cases, the monarch. With the implementation of these actions, the country officially becomes a member of NATO, receiving various foreign policy results from this. However, one must be prepared for the fact that membership in such an organization also imposes restrictions on the country, in particular in the search for partner states in the political arena.
