Name of the mountain

There is a gentle hill in the western part of the capital. In ancient times, travelers came here to inspect the city from a height, leaving, it was also customary to climb the mountain and bow to the hospitable haven of travelers. This is how this hill got its name Poklonnaya Gora. This name is found in chronicles from the 16th century.

Poklonnaya Gora is located on the Smolensk road, which is associated with a considerable number of historical events. Here Napoleon stood waiting for the keys to Moscow, along this road, our soldiers went to military operations during the Second World War.

Many historians also believe that the mountain acquired its name due to the fact that it was on it that high-ranking foreign guests were greeted by the Russians with bows. Perhaps it was this fact that prompted Napoleon to wait for the keys to the capital of our Motherland at this so significant place.

There is also another point of view on the origin of the name. It is believed that in feudal Russia the word "bow" denoted a temporary payment for the period of stay on Russian territory. The bribe-takers were located precisely on the hill, from where all the roads leading to the city were visible.

Memorial

Nowadays, Poklonnaya Gora is part of the memorial dedicated to the memory of those who died during the Great Patriotic War.

The memorial on Poklonnaya Hill was conceived back in 1942, but it was not destined to appear during the war, and therefore in those distant years it was only possible to lay the foundation slab and the park.

Over time, the famous triumphal arch appeared nearby, but the memorial stele itself shot up into the sky only in the late eighties. It was built with donations from the people.

In the nineties, despite difficult economic upheavals, the Moscow government allocated funds to create a separate complex in honor of the fallen soldiers and those who forged the victory of the forty-fifth in the rear.

A large number of monuments have been built here, where you can come and bow to those who no longer exist. Nearby there is a memorial synagogue, an Orthodox church and a mosque.
