Memorial monuments of the Patriotic War of 1941-1945 scattered throughout the territory of our country. They were also installed in those areas where the hostilities did not go on, but whose inhabitants took part in the battles and died in them. Despite the fact that more than 75 years have passed, only some of the monuments are included in the official registers. Therefore, you can independently compile a list of World War II memorials in the region where you live.
Instructions
Step 1
Memorials and monuments dedicated to the participants and events of the Patriotic War have been massively erected since the mid-60s of the last century, they were timed to coincide with the 20th anniversary of the victory. There are government organizations that maintain a register of such memorials. These include the Committees for the Preservation of Historical and Cultural Monuments, which operate under the authorities, in the administration of your district, as well as military enlistment offices.
Step 2
Write a request addressed to the head of the Committee or the district military commissar with a request to provide the available information about such monuments. It is good if it is possible to obtain such a list in electronic form. Such information does not belong to those that constitute a state secret, so an answer must be provided to you within a month.
Step 3
Find out which public organizations in your area collect information about memorial burials, apply with such a request there too. Offer them cooperation in compiling a catalog of monuments of the Patriotic War, they will gladly take part in your work and provide all available information.
Step 4
In the event that hostilities were fought on the territory of your area, it is quite possible that there are still mass and single graves that are not included in any register. Carry out the search work yourself. To do this, it is enough to find information on the battles that took place in your area on the Internet or in special literature. Mark those settlements near which there were battles.
Step 5
This information can be found on the website of the Ministry of Defense of the WDS "Memorial", which contains information "On irrecoverable losses", i.e. about the missing and the dead. Make a selection, activate the search area "Search for graves", indicating the place of death in your area. Upon request, you will be provided with a list with the names of the settlements that are the place of mass deaths of the Red Army soldiers. Travel to these places, ask local residents, collect information about burials.
Step 6
Systematize the information received, create a database that will be convenient to work with. Enter in it all the information that you managed to collect. Make a map of your area and plot on it the places where monuments, obelisks, sculptural groups and mass graves of soldiers of the Great Patriotic War are located.
