Calculation of maternity leave and payments for working women

Not all women are eligible for leave. It is not given to non-working mothers, as well as to those who have not worked in the same company for more than 3 months full-time. For part-time workers, the minimum threshold for a maternity leave is 600 hours of work for their company.

There are also specific conditions for business owners or self-employed women. They cannot take leave according to the same rules as employees, and must provide for themselves during pregnancy.

Maternity leave in Canada is divided into 2 parts - before and after the birth of a child. A pregnant woman may not work for 17 weeks before giving birth. If desired, she has the opportunity to transfer unused days to the period after the birth of the child. After childbirth, parental leave begins - it is 35 weeks. Thus, the total vacation period during and after pregnancy is about a year. In rare situations, the vacation can be extended.

If the couple wishes, the father of the child can spend with him instead of the mother part or all of the leave after childbirth. In this case, maternity benefits will be calculated and accrued depending on the father's income.

The amounts paid to the expectant mother depend on her salary. It is based on her average income over the past six months. She has the right to receive a percentage of this average earnings during the entire vacation. The percentage depends on the province - for example, in Ontario it is 55%, and in Quebec it is 70% during pregnancy and in the first three months after childbirth, and then 55%. There is a payout ceiling of no more than CAD 1,800 per month. A woman can earn extra money, but so that the earnings do not exceed half of her maternity payments.

In addition, there are special conditions for certain categories of workers. When concluding an employment contract, companies often provide special bonuses for employees, including an increase in the amount of maternity payments up to 90% of the average salary. Most often, such bonuses are received by leading specialists and civil servants.

If a family adopts a child, one of the parents can also get 35 weeks of paid leave.

Payments for non-working women

Even if a woman does not work or does not meet the criteria for the payment of maternity money, she may receive some financial assistance. After the baby is born and until the age of 6, she will receive CAD $ 100 per month, regardless of family income. Poor families with less than the official minimum per person may receive another allowance - about 300 Canadian dollars.
