The European Union is one of the most powerful political and economic organizations in the world. But to enter there, a country must meet certain conditions. Also, the government of the state must follow a certain algorithm of actions.
Instructions
Step 1
Explore the possibility of a particular country joining the European Union. Geographically, it should be located in Europe. However, exceptions are possible if the country is culturally close to Europe in many ways. This, for example, happened in the case of the admission of Cyprus to the EU. Also, the country must be democratic, that is, there must be freedom of speech and fair elections must be held. The candidate state is obliged to ensure the observance of human rights on its territory, as well as to have a sufficient level of economic development to function on an equal footing with other EU countries.
Step 2
Prepare documents for joining the European Union. The process begins with the candidate state submitting its application, which is considered by the European Commission and then by the European Council. Both of these organizations should give a positive opinion on the issue. This takes into account the political and economic situation in the candidate country.
Step 3
Start negotiations on the conditions for the country's accession to the EU. During this stage, the state receives a number of conditions necessary for membership in the European Union. Often, a country even has to change its legislation in such a way that it does not conflict with the legal norms of treaties between EU countries. Also, the discussion can relate to economic aspects, for example, the preservation of financial assistance from the state to certain sectors of the national economy.
Step 4
When many conditions are agreed, prepare an associate membership agreement in the organization. It may contain a transitional period during which the country prepares to become a full-fledged part of the EU. Also, the agreement may determine the conditions for joining the Schengen Agreement and entering the euro area.
Step 5
Sign and ratify the EU accession treaty. The European Union must do the same with the consent of the European Parliament.
