A family
Giuseppe Moscati was born in 1880 in the Italian city of Benevento. His father was a famous lawyer, and his mother was engaged in children, of whom there were nine in the family. The family did not live in poverty, Giuseppe studied well and was interested in science from childhood.
After school, the young man easily entered the medical faculty of the Naples Institute. Already during the entrance exams, the admissions committee saw an extraordinary doctor in Moscati. Giuseppe Moscati never married, preferring a medical career to personal happiness.
Medical activity
After graduation, Giuseppe Moscati worked in various hospitals in Naples. During the eruption of Mount Vesuvius, a young doctor directed the evacuation of a nearby hospital and rescued the sick, risking his own life. During the cholera epidemic, Moscati fought selflessly for the lives of every sick person, including the inhabitants of the poorest and dirtiest neighborhoods.
During the First World War, Giuseppe Moscati went to the front, but he was not allowed, believing that he would be more useful in the rear. He treated the wounded and saved many lives.
Moscati has contributed to the study of many serious diseases such as diabetes. The Italian government highly appreciated Giuseppe's medical talent, repeatedly sending him to international medical congresses.
Moscati taught with success in a medical clinic, he was very fond of young doctors.
Christian exploits
Medical practice became the meaning of life for Giuseppe Moscati. He treated the sick not for the sake of a fee, but for the sake of cure. Poor people came to him in droves, whom he treated completely free of charge. And he helped many needy patients with money, investing in prescriptions. The idea of helping one's neighbor, whatever that help may be, was the main idea in the life of a doctor.
Giuseppe was a Christian. He often recommended that sick people go to church, confess and receive communion. And he did it on a regular basis.
Many doctors did not understand Moscati and sharply criticized him for his commitment to the faith.
Death and canonization
Giuseppe Moscati died at the age of 46 from an unexpected illness. It literally burned down in a few days. So many people came to see the famous doctor on his last journey that they had to block the streets.
25 years later, the Roman Catholic Church canonized Giuseppe Moscati. The Pope conducting the rite of canonization noted that Giuseppe Moscati is an example of a layman who, throughout his life, has shown an example of selfless service to God. He gave advice to every Christian to seek his calling to be like Moscati.
