David Gilmour is a famous British guitarist, vocalist and leader of the legendary Pink Floyd. In 2011, Rolling Stone magazine named David one of the 100 Best Guitarists of All Time.
Biography
David John Gilmore was born in Cambridge, UK in 1946 on March 6th. The boy was born into a family of teachers. From an early age, they were exemplary examples of social behavior for their son. In a political context, they adhered to socialist views and supported the Labor Party. This significantly affected David, he completely adopted the views and political preferences of his parents.
Gilmore received his school education at Pers-school in Cambridge. At this school, David met future like-minded people, Sid Barrett and Roger Waters. In 1966, the guys went on an impromptu tour, they were not yet a musical group, but simply came off in the vastness of France and Spain. To have something to go for a walk, sometimes they earned money by singing songs on the streets. However, there was not enough money, and David was hospitalized with exhaustion. After this unpleasant incident, the guys hijacked a truck and safely returned to their homeland.
Career
In 1965, Syd Barrett and Roger Waters formed the Pink Floyd group, but after 3 years the team was experiencing big problems due to Syd's addiction to drugs. In 1968 Waters invited David Gilmour to join the band. Initially, his main function was to support the unstable Barrett, sometimes David replaced him when he was unable to perform.
This could not go on for long, and ultimately the group invited Sid to leave the stage, but remain in the team as an author. Sid rejected this offer and Pink Floyd remained, as is commonly believed, in the "gold" line-up: drummer Nick Mason, keyboard was Richard Wright, Roger Waters played bass, and David Gilmour took the place of vocalist and part-time guitarist. In this composition, the group lasted until the mid-80s, by that time the group had 12 albums.
By the end of the 70s, the group was going through hard times due to constant disputes about the future of the group, the permanent keyboardist Richard Wright left the band. By 1985, the growing conflict between leaders Roger Water and David Gilmour peaked and Waters announced the breakup of the group, but Gilmore was quick to refute this. Since the rest of the musicians were on the side of the band's vocalist, Roger had to leave the team.
He later tried to take back the rights to the label through the courts, but he lost. From that moment on, David Gilmour became the sole leader of the group. After all this hype, Richard Wright returned in 87, and with this line-up Pink Floyd recorded two more albums. From the moment of the last recording and until 2014, the collective did not release new records, and the musicians themselves were mainly engaged in independent work.
During the Pink Floyd lull, David Gilmour recorded two full-length albums and along the way tried himself as a producer at his own recording studio in Astoria, a house on the water, which David acquired back in 1986.
In 2005, the band reassembled the "golden lineup" for the Live 8 concert, which took place as part of the protest and pressure on the G8. This epic reunion sparked an incredible spike in sales for Echoes: The Best of Pink Floyd - the number of copies sold increased 13 times. The money raised from ticket sales and CDs was donated by David Gilmour to charity.
In the future, attempts were made to revive the group, but still the Live 8 concert was the brightest and most memorable moment in history, and in 2015, after the statements of the group's leaders, it finally ceased to exist. In the same year, David released his fourth solo album, Rattle That Lock, with which he went on a tour of Europe, and in early 2016 in America. At the end of the tour, the musician set to work on a new disc and is now recording singles for it. For the period of work, he refused to tour and sat down in his studio.
Personal life
David Gilmour has been married twice. The first choice was a devoted Pink Floyd fan Virginia. The girl got backstage and met David personally, and in 1971 they officially married. This union lasted for 18 long years, but in 1989 the couple divorced, during which time they had four children: Alice, Clara, Sarah and the boy Matthew.
As a bachelor, Gilmore did not go long, and after 5 years he met his new love - Polly Samson, with whom he is happy to this day. In the new union, David had three children: Joe, Gabriela and Romani. The couple also adopted a boy, Charlie, with whom the family periodically has problems, for example, in 2010, the guy actively participated in a student riot. The police managed to prove that he tried to set fire to the building of the Supreme Court, throwing garbage at Prince Charles's car. For his antics, Charlie received 16 months in prison.
