Absolutely disinterested and voluntarily donate their blood to someone is not capable of every person. Due to this problem of misunderstanding of the seriousness and importance of donation, as well as various misconceptions on this account, there is now a shortage of donated blood all over the world. According to estimates, it can reach 50%.

According to statistics from the WHO - World Health Association - 79 and 80 countries with an insufficient supply of donated blood are developing countries. This includes Russia, where there are only 14 donors per 1000 people. In developed countries, there are already more than 30 donors per 1000 people. China (China) lags behind us - there the number of donors is 5-10 people.

Thus, the main goal of World Blood Donor Day is to increase blood supply by attracting volunteers who are willing to donate blood regularly. On this day, in various cities around the world, volunteers congratulate honorary donors, talk about how important it is to move away from paid donation. After all, volunteers first of all donate blood in order to help other people. They don't think about reward.

The tradition of celebrating this day originated relatively recently. The first World Blood Donor Day was organized by the World Health Organization on June 14, 2004. In 2010, WHO and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies adopted a Global Strategy for Action. This document spelled out actions for the development of the donor movement in the world until 2020. By this time, all WHO countries should receive donated blood from volunteer donors free of charge.

The donor movement around the world began to actively develop later. Several months ago, a bill was passed called "On the donation of blood and its components", which establishes payments for volunteer donors. Thanks to this project, the All-Russian Blood Bank appeared. In addition to World Blood Donor Day, April 20 is celebrated as National Blood Donor Day. In 1840, on this day, the first blood transfusion was made in Russia.

Donor Days were organized by the National Fund for Healthcare Development in Moscow in 2012:

- June 14 - at SPK DZM; address - Polikarpova street 14, building 2;

- June 16 - in the defense industry complex at the 1st GKB; address - Leninsky prospect 10, building 1.

All participating in the donor days of the fund received informational materials about donation. Donors were awarded souvenirs with the symbols of the Blood Service and the Donate Blood - Save Lives! Project.

Some volunteers came to donate blood for the first time, and there are also people who come to such events on a regular basis. The National Health Foundation hopes regular donor days will help people build a conscious understanding that blood should be donated regularly because many thousands of people need it every day. Stocks are constantly being consumed, so they need to be replenished.
