Little is known about the date of birth and about which estate the family of the famous mechanic was from. One can only say that his hometown was St. Petersburg, where he lived and worked in the late eighteenth - early nineteenth centuries.
Aleksey Gladkoy was hardly a member of the nobility. At least he had no money for admission. But thanks to his natural ingenuity and tenacious mind, the young man was able to get a decent education at the then famous Academy of Arts, which was under the tutelage of the Russian imperial family.
Perhaps he started as an auditor, but thanks to inventions, albeit unfinished and bold ideas, he was able to attract the attention of teachers. And later he even received the patronage of the Russian ruler, known as Maria Feodorovna, who had great influence at court.
Alexey was able to fix a mechanical doll bought by one entrepreneur for a small price. Although foreign inventors promised to try to fix it at a higher cost.
The merchant was happy and told his acquaintances about the self-taught inventor. The fame of the talented student spread throughout St. Petersburg and aroused the interest of representatives of the imperial family.
The first meeting of the future mechanic and Maria Feodorovna took place. Later, she patronized the student in every possible way and made sure that his contribution to the history of Russian inventions did not go unnoticed.
