One of the oldest documentary film festivals is the Festival dei Popoli held in Florence. Its history dates back to 1959. An international film festival is held annually in the Polish city of Krakow, where documentaries and animation films are reviewed. The Russian national prize in the field of non-fiction films and television "LAVR" or "Laurel branch" is presented annually in Moscow. This is the only professional award in the field of non-fiction films in Russia, for which films in different languages of the peoples of Russia can be nominated.

The Lavrovaya Branch Prize Directorate and the Union of Cinematographers of Russia in 2007 established another Russian festival, Artdokfest, which is held in Moscow. More than 20 thousand viewers can see author's documentaries from directors from all over the world, but filmed in Russian.
