Any music played with musical instruments is called instrumental. Its important feature is the absence of a vocal part. Various electronic works can be understood by this word, the main thing is that they do not have a human voice.

All music performed on instruments is so diverse that it is difficult to describe it in a few words. It can be ensemble, orchestral and solo. Among the genres in which the instrumental means are used, one can name classics, jazz, post-rock, various treatments and arrangements.

Although categories such as electronic and instrumental music are often contrasted, sometimes certain types of electronic music are considered instrumental if the compositions do not use a human voice. This is some kind of contradiction, but it does exist, it is useful to know about it.

A variety of instruments are used in instrumental music. Most often these are orchestras or various musical formations, for example, quartets, quintets and others. But any music played even on one instrument without vocals is also considered instrumental.

People have loved instrumental music since ancient times. According to archaeological data, the age of the most ancient musical instruments is about 40 thousand years, and these are flutes. They were found in the southwestern part of Germany in the Hole-Fels cave. The ancient Greeks were already famous fans of instrumental music. Plato noticed in his works that the townspeople prefer the instrumental music of stringed kifar and lyre more to their taste, while the villagers prefer wind instruments: the flute.

The development of European instrumental music was somewhat hampered by the fact that for many hundreds of years the church had an almost monopoly on the performance of musical works. Almost all the music was religious, which means that it praised the Lord, so vocal parts were used in it. There is even a well-known statement by one religious figure on this topic: “Instruments have neither soul nor life. They cannot praise God. Nevertheless, even then, instrumental music did not cease to exist.

But the dark Middle Ages are over, the time of the Renaissance has come, when the beautiful arts, including instrumental music, again come under the most scrutiny of people. Since that time, music has been developing very actively, moreover, instrumental forms are developing together with vocal-instrumental ones, they walk hand in hand, and one is not conceivable without the other.
