Step 1
Ask relatives who are still alive and, though vaguely, remember this person. Ask if they have any documents left that would help you to make your search easier (letters, titles or awards, etc.).
Step 2
If you have letters from the front in your hands, then it is possible that you will be able to find out the number of the field post office and the number of the military unit in which your relative was listed. However, remember that during the war it was forbidden to indicate any reliable information about units and their movements, and the field post number often changed.
Step 3
Contact the recruiting office where your relative was called up during the war, and the local archive. It is likely that in the military registration and enlistment office or in the archive you will be able to indicate the unit number, information about its commanders, and the combat path.
Step 4
Go to the Internet and open the website www.obd-memorial.ru. The Memorial website is the most complete database on the Russian Internet about all the dead and missing. If you have not found the information you are interested in on this resource, visit the site www.soldat.ru, which contains books of memory of several regions of Russia and electronic reference books on SA units.
Step 5
Make a request to the archive of TsAMO in Podolsk. The request must indicate for what purpose you are looking for information about the deceased (that is, for example, attach copies of documents proving a certain degree of relationship). In addition, you can make similar inquiries to the archives of the RGVA Central Asia Ministry of Internal Affairs, Central Asia Ministry of Internal Affairs troops, Central Asia FSB, which may also have information (if this person, for example, was captured and / or was repressed).
Step 6
If you have not yet found information about the deceased person, post all the information you have on the sites www.obd-memorial.ru or www.soldat.ru. Attach to the posting form and electronic copies of documents (if any), and a photograph of this person, and also indicate that you are looking for his burial place or other information about him.
