Any writer, regardless of work experience, involuntarily thinks about the financial success of his work before starting a new book. The conditions of the literary market and publishing ambitions dictate tough conditions that a writer must put up with in order for his book to be popular with an audience.
It is necessary
- - coordinates of publishers considering manuscripts;
- - analysis of the priorities put forward by publishers;
- - statistics of sales of contemporary literature by genre.
Instructions
Step 1
Determine the genre in which the book will be written. It is also worth deciding on the target audience (age, education, marital status, average monthly income), volume and relevance.
Step 2
Find the coordinates of publishers (official sites, addresses, phone numbers) interested in reviewing manuscripts of similar genres. Make a list of potentially loyal publishers and study their priorities in detail. As a rule, on the home page of each publisher's website, you can find this information, which, in particular, says what works it is interested in. Explore the bestsellers of recent years that have been released by these publishers. Read some of these books and try to understand how the author was able to interest first the publisher and then the reader.
Step 3
Explore the bestsellers of recent years in the selected genre of other publishers, giving preference to the largest. Find the strengths of the books, novelty and usefulness to the reader. It will be useful to communicate with fans of the literature of the chosen genre and individual studied book series. Readers will better than any analyst tell about their feelings about contemporary literature and the expectations placed on new authors.
Step 4
Collect the information received and organize it. Try to build not only a portrait of your reader, but also try to structure his expectations from the acquisition of your book: usefulness, relevance (for scientific and popular science literature), non-linearity of the plot, uniqueness of characters and sequence of events (for fiction), etc. Based on with this data, start creating the concept of the book. This information will be of little interest to the publisher - it is of greater importance for the author himself, since it will serve as a guide in the creation of the book.
