Since police officers are always present at rallies, participants in such events must be able to communicate with them. Insults, threats, and even more so an attack on law enforcement officers are fraught with major troubles.

Step 1
Understand one simple thing: the cops are just doing their job. This does not mean that they like to do it, or that they do not support your ideas. On the contrary: some law enforcement officials share the opinion of the protesters. You shouldn't see these people as enemies. Treat them well and it will be much easier for you to behave correctly.
Step 2
Do not allow yourself to offend police officers, make ambiguous jokes or giggles, or mock them. Jokes and stories about police officers will also be completely inappropriate. Do not provoke law enforcement officers, do not pester them with questions or threaten. This behavior is not only inadequate, but will certainly lead to trouble.
Step 3
If a police officer asks you about the purpose of the rally, your participation in it, your ideas, etc., answer calmly and correctly. No need to use swear words or try to brush aside questions. You can afford to joke, but only if the joke is appropriate and not offensive to the police officer. Laughter can sometimes help defuse the situation.
Step 4
Do not resist if they want to detain you together with some other participants of the rally. To prevent this from happening, you should stay away from inappropriate people shouting offensive slogans, provoking conflicts and trying to start a fight. In such situations, law enforcement officials usually do not conduct interviews. They just grab both activists and those who happened to be nearby. If you are in the wrong place at the wrong time, just let the policeman take you away, do not shout, and even more so do not fight.
Step 5
Do not try to explain to the police their rights and responsibilities, especially if you are already being taken to the police station. Do not scandal, do not threaten with violence and do not shout that the policeman did not introduce himself, did not tell you about your rights, but simply pushed you into the bus. Calm down and keep quiet. If you are asked about something, answer shortly. First, as mentioned above, the police are just doing their job, they do not intend to harm you just like that, of their own free will. Secondly, the protesters should know what event they were going to and what the consequences could be.
