Golda Meir, the future politician of Israel, was born in Kiev on May 3, 1898 in a large Jewish family. The time was tense and very hectic. Golda's family all the time had to fear pogroms. In search of a calmer environment, the family moved to relatives in the Belarusian city of Pinsk. Then the girl's father went to work in the United States. The whole family followed him to Milwaukee.
Already in the first grades of school, Golda showed her leadership qualities and a penchant for the humanities. Together with her friend, she raised funds to buy textbooks for schoolchildren in need.
Golda studied at school with great enthusiasm. However, the mother did not encourage her daughter's craving for knowledge. She believed that Golda should first of all think about the upcoming marriage, and men do not like too smart women.
When Golda realized that there was no escape from her mother's obsessive admonitions, she simply ran away from her home, moving to Denver to live with her older sister. Here she met an educated and interesting young man - Maurice Meerson. They got married in 1917.
Looking for a better life
Golda had been hatching the idea of creating a national home for Jews for many years. To carry out the daring plan, it took a trip to Palestine. This young couple did in 1921. Arriving in Tel Aviv, Golda and her husband applied to the agricultural community for admission. It was difficult to live in a new place, I had to work hard and hard. Soon Golda became seriously ill. The husband insisted that they move to Jerusalem. After a while, the couple had a son, Menachem, and a daughter, Sarah.
The young mother received one of her first public positions, becoming the secretary of the women's council of the workers' trade union. She is on a business trip to the United States, where she hoped to receive support from wealthy Jews. However, the moneybags were in no hurry to provide financial assistance to the Palestinian Jews.
When World War II broke out, Golda worked hard to secure permission for American Jews to move from Europe to America. At the end of November 1947, the UN decided to divide Palestine into two independent states. The state of Israel emerged on the world map. The United States was the first to recognize it, followed by the Soviet Union. Golda Meir was appointed Israel's ambassador to the USSR.
Golda Meir's political career
The population of the young Jewish state grew rapidly. After a few months outside the country, Golda Meir returned to Israel. From 1952 to 1956, she served as Minister of Labor, then headed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Israel.
The peak of Golda Meir's political career came from 1969 to 1974, when Meir served as Prime Minister of Israel.
