short biography
Yermolova's pedigree consisted of creative people, and the talent was inherited by the girl.
Her grandfather, being in the hopeless status of a serf, was a violinist. But, having received freedom, without hesitation he went to the theater, where he worked until the end of his days. My father tried his hand on stage, then wrote vaudeville. However, he settled on the quietest, but no less interesting profession - prompter.
Mary was born in July 1853. She spent all her childhood in the theater, where she watched with interest the rehearsals, preparations and performances. Perhaps this helped awaken her artistic gift.
Already at the age of 9, Ermolova began her studies at a theater school. Her parents sent her to a ballet class, but the girl received neither pleasure nor results.
The father supported his daughter as best he could, and then even turned to one of the teachers for additional lessons. But Ivan Samarin, who has authority, made a verdict - the child has no talent. According to the expert, if Maria does not stop doing this, then she will spend her whole life in the crowd.
This did not upset the girl, because she closely followed the play of the best actors and gained experience.
The girl got her first small role in 1866. For the vaudeville "The groom snapped up" needed a sweet, young and at the same time
flirtatious heroine. Maria, like no one, was better suited for this, but still did not receive praise and respect.
Later, Maria Nikolaevna got the opportunity to replace the ill main actress in the play "Emilia Galotti". And now the glory hour has come. The girl, who was barely 17 years old, was clapped so much that she had to go out for an encore 12 times.
After graduating from college, Ermolova easily got into the collective of the Maly Theater and received a set of roles for comedy-romantic heroines. But in each of them, she added her own touch of tragedy, irony and mystery.
The more mature Maria Nikolaevna became, the more often she received more serious and deep roles.
One of the brightest moments in the life of the actress is her own benefit performance, in which the play "The Sheep Spring" opened a new direction of theatrical creativity - "the era of romance."
Ermolova was also fond of reading poetry. Finding small breaks between rehearsals, she shone on the stage, voicing the words of Pushkin, Nikitin, Nekrasov.
Personal life of Maria Ermolova
New acquaintances, performances, brought her to Nikolai Shubinsky. The future lawyer only knocked out a place for himself in this world and the actress really liked it. Mutual love arose.
In a series of plays, there was a small place for the wedding of two lovers. But during the revolution, the husband and the whole family were forced to leave. Shubinsky was not destined to return to his homeland and in 1921 Maria became a widow.
Almost 2 years later, feeling sick and depressed, she left the stage.
As is often the case, fans switched to other talented performers, leaving the actress alone. Few cared how she lived, being far beyond the peak of fame. She was supported only by the scientist-therapist Konstantin Pavlinov, who really liked Yermolova during her husband's life.
The great actress died on March 12, 1928. Her grave is located at the Novodevichy cemetery, near the deceased Chekhov and Stanislavsky.
Child, family, work - all this was replaced by the theater.
