Lisa Rani Rae was born in Toronto, Canada in 1972 to a blended family: her dad was Indian and her mother was Polish. And then a lucky chance smiled at her: one well-known Canadian magazine was casting models, and the girl got on the cover of the magazine. Career as an actress
She made her film debut in 1997 in Bharata Rangachari's fantasy comedy Funny Game (1994). It was a small role, but Ray's acting was highly appreciated, and director Deepa Mehta invited her to his film "Hollywood Bollywood" (2002). Here Lisa played the "fake" bride of the millionaire Rahul, who is forced by his relatives to marry an Indian woman. In the end, all relatives start to like the not real bride, and then Rahul himself falls in love with her. The film is interesting in that it contains many elements of Hollywood films, and in combination with Indian flavor, they look very interesting.
After filming this film, Lisa realized that she would like to be professionally engaged in acting, so she went to London, to the Desmond Jones School of Mime and Physical Theater. She also received her master's degree from the Academy of Live and Recorded Arts. She wanted to completely devote herself to her studies and absorb all the knowledge that teachers gave in theory and practice. However, director Mehta called and asked her to star in another of his films - Water (2005), which was later nominated for an Oscar as the best film in a foreign language. Lisa could not refuse, because Dipa offered her the main role - the prostitute Kaliyani. Besides, the script was very interesting. According to the plot, an eight-year-old girl found out that she had become a widow. In India in 1938, this was possible: when someone had a daughter, she could be married to a grown man. Now an unenviable fate awaited her - to spend days in a shelter and never get married. The girl's life is brightened only by communication with Keliyani, who earns money with her body to feed the girls from the orphanage. Fortunately, a young man has appeared in Keliyani's life, who wants to change her fate and the fate of the residents of the shelter. For this film, Lisa learned Hindi.
Another notable role went to Ray in the film "I Can't Think Straight" (2008), where she played a lesbian. And her work was so sincere that the audience suspected the actress of being gay - her emotions were so lively and natural. She knows how to make viewers see with her eyes and feel with her heart.
