The title "Hero of Russia" is the highest title that is awarded for services to the state and people, if they were associated with the accomplishment of a heroic deed. To date, 1,012 people have received this title.

In addition to the title "Hero of Russia", a special badge of special distinction is also awarded. This is the Gold Star medal. It is a five-pointed star with smooth dihedral rays on the obverse. The length of each ray does not exceed 15 mm. The reverse side is smooth, limited along the contour by a thin rim.
On the reverse side of the medal, it is written in raised letters "Hero of Russia". The medal is connected by means of a lug and a ring with a gold-plated metal block. It is a rectangular plate containing a three-color moire ribbon. The ribbon depicts the tricolor Russian flag. The medal itself is gold, and it weighs just over 20 g.

The title of "Hero of Russia" was established for the first time in 1992. Then a law was issued, which approved the badge of special distinction - the Gold Star medal. This law says that the title of "Hero of Russia" is awarded only once. It is assigned by the President of the Russian Federation. This award is presented both during life and posthumously. Moreover, it is given not only to military people, but also to ordinary citizens who have accomplished a feat in the name of the people and the country.
The title "Hero of Russia" is a separate type of state awards. This is the highest award, which occupies the highest place in the list of state awards of the Russian Federation. It is noteworthy that after the assignment of this title, a bronze bust is installed in the hero's homeland. True, for this a corresponding decree of the President of the Russian Federation must be issued.

For what deeds do they give the title "Hero of Russia"? The lists of recipients include, for example, combatants participating in repelling the invasion of militants into the Republic of Dagestan. Further, these are the soldiers and officers participating in the Second Chechen War, who prevented the invasion of bandit formations into this republic.
175 people were awarded the "Hero of Russia" medals for their participation in hostilities in the First Chechen War. Oddly enough, 108 people received this award for their participation in the Great Patriotic War. 87 people received the title of "Hero of Russia" for testing aviation technology. Unfortunately, many of them died.
Step 4
This award was also presented to those who fought against terrorism in the regions of the North Caucasus. 44 astronauts also received this award. It was awarded to naval sailors, submariners, and testers of naval technology. In addition, the participants of the October events in Moscow in 1993 received the “Hero of Russia” star.
Among the awardees there are participants in the hostilities in South Ossetia, rescuers, participants in hostilities in Tajikistan, senior officials of various departments and ministries, intelligence officers, athletes and travelers, participants in the Afghan war, liquidators of the Chernobyl accident and many others.

Of course, the main criteria for conferring this title are courage and heroism shown by people in a given situation. Thanks to these exploits, not only the Russian Federation, but also other countries could continue to live in peace and harmony. Of course, more than 30% of those awarded received this title posthumously, but in most cases, the award found heroes during their lifetime.
