Education and formation

Interstate relations are built according to certain rules and traditions. The diplomatic department selects competent and psychologically stable employees. People receive specialized knowledge in special educational institutions. Intellectual abilities and moral qualities are taken into account without fail. Sergei Mikhailovich Rogov has been engaged in science all his adult life. The subject of his research was the problems of national security, the military aspects of foreign policy, Russian-American relations, the foreign policy of our country, regardless of what it is called.

The future research assistant was born on October 22, 1948 in the family of a military pilot. At that time, the parents lived in Moscow. My father served in one of the units of the air force. Mother worked as a history teacher. The head of the family was systematically transferred from one garrison to another. Already in his mature years, Sergei Mikhailovich will remember this period, and compare it with the gypsy nomadism. He moved from one school to another ten times. Flights and travel did not prevent him from obtaining a certificate of maturity with a gold medal.

In any region where Rogov had to live and study, he strictly observed the daily routine. In the snowy tundra and in the hot sands of Kara-Kum, he rose at seven o'clock and went out for morning exercises. Then, after breakfast, he went to school or helped his mother with household chores. Sergei read a hundred pages of text every day. I chose historical and adventure novels from books. But most of all he was attracted by the memoirs of famous political figures. In the late fifties and early sixties, there were few such books.

Once a friend gave him a biography of the famous British politician Winston Churchill to read. A greasy, samizdat book had to be read overnight. Rogov not only got acquainted with the content, he forever remembered some of the rules followed by a lover of cognac and cigars. It was from that time that Sergei made up a tough daily routine for himself and tried to comply with it under any circumstances. The habit developed from childhood helped him to cope with problems in difficult life situations, although some friends considered it eccentric.

Scientific horizons

At a certain stage in his development, Rogov wanted to follow in his father's footsteps and get the profession of a military pilot. However, after intimate conversations with his parents, he changed his mind. The gold medal and his father's support helped him enter the Moscow Institute of International Relations (MGIMO). From the first year, Sergei began to specialize in a topical topic - he was offered to study the relations between the USSR and the United States. In 1971, he received a diploma in specialized education and entered the graduate school of the Institute of the USA and Canada. During his studies, he spent almost two years on an internship in New York.

In 1977, Sergei Rogov defended his Ph. D. thesis on "The Influence of the Military-Industrial Complex on US Foreign Policy." In order to reveal this topic in as much detail as possible, the young scientist had to work closely with a large number of open sources of information. The subtlety of the situation was that for the use of classified data, it was possible to lose a visa to enter the country. The graduate student had to mobilize all his resources and skills to fulfill all the current conditions and requirements.

Professional activity

Continuing to study the intricacies of Russian-American relations, Rogov defended his doctoral dissertation in 1984. Sometimes it takes several years. Sergei Mikhailovich was involved in the training as an expert. He worked for a year and a half at the Soviet embassy in the United States. In 1989, Rogov was appointed head of the military-strategic research department at his own institute. Negotiations were under way between the great powers to reduce nuclear weapons, and politicians needed objective information.

In 1991, after the liquidation of the Soviet Union, Rogov took over as Deputy Director of the Institute for the United States and Canada. The situation in the world has changed dramatically and now it was necessary to establish ties between countries on mutually beneficial terms. By this time, young scientists came to the institute with new views and methods of work. Sergei Mikhailovich devoted most of his time to coordinating the actions of departments and laboratories.
