Mother is a nurse at a local clinic.

The house had a gramophone and a button accordion. My father played the button accordion well, not knowing the musical notation at all. Aurally. The head of the family played and the hostess sang. In their free time, everyone sat down at the table and listened to gramophone records. Many of his acquaintances advised Gulyaev to study music and vocals. However, the future singer treated his musical pursuits as a hobby. A serious young man, he decided to pursue a medical degree.

Having received a certificate of maturity in 1947, Gulyaev entered the Sverdlovsk Medical Institute. In this educational institution, cultural work was put on a solid foundation. Yuri found himself in a familiar environment, since he was immediately attracted to participate in a vocal and instrumental ensemble. I had to attend lectures from time to time. The student soon realized that the chosen specialty did not attract him at all. And then he made a difficult decision for himself - he took the documents and entered the vocal department of the Ural Conservatory.
