Earlier months had a different name. In the old days, they were always associated with weather conditions and changes in nature. It is not difficult to list how our ancestors called the months.
Instructions
Step 1
January. This month our great-grandfathers christened as "sechen". This is due to the fact that already in this cold winter period in the villages they began to prepare for field work in the coming spring. The felling of trees began. This was necessary in order to create a decent arable land in the place of the forest.
Step 2
February. Our ancestors named the months in accordance with the anthropogenic factor. The trees, cut down in January, dried up in the places of the felling. Hence the name "dry" appeared. February also had a different name - "fierce", because there were no such severe frosts in any other period.
Step 3
March. In relation to nature, March was a rather brutal period of time. People began to burn trees that had previously been so carefully cut down. The ash after this fire was used as fertilizer for the soil. Because of the latter fact, March was dubbed "birch ash".
Step 4
April. The names of the months were not always invented in honor of certain works. For example, in April the snow finally melted, buds swelled on the trees. A variety of grasses began to spike on the ground. Therefore, the name "grass" was fully justified.
Step 5
May. Spring smoothly turns into summer, the sun is hot in a completely different way. Whole fields of flowers grow around. Urban residents are also enthusiastic. For this connection of nature with the mood of man, May was called "color".
Step 6
June. This month bore two names. The first, "worm", was associated with red. In the past, this shade stood for beauty. His second name, "isok", was based on the behavior of insects. So, it is in June that grasshoppers begin to chirp, sing songs.
Step 7
July. The names of the months in our ancestors echoed the flowering of certain plants. In July, linden trees bloom violently, and bees, in turn, become active collectors of honey. For this fact, the month was called "sticky".
Step 8
August. For many peoples, the end of summer was accompanied by a traditional harvest. Russia was no exception. Ripe ears were cut using powerful sickles. Therefore, August has two names: "serpen" in honor of the tool and "stubble" in honor of the process itself.
Step 9
September. The first month of autumn could not remain without a logical and beautiful name. The leaves on the trees naturally changed their color to gold. The same thing happened with the withering grass. As a result, the month was called "yellow".
Step 10
October. During this period, autumn comes into its own. The leaves quickly fly around, it rains abundantly. The streets become viscous and muddy, puddles everywhere. For the high humidity and the type of trees, October had two names - "mud" and "leaf fall".
Step 11
November. The name of this month does not immediately become clear - "breast". But our ancestors named it so based on their own observations. Snow is just beginning to fall in November. But the first frosts have already thundered, turning the viscous mud into ice lumps. These lumps were then called breasts.
Step 12
December. The first month of winter greeted people with cold. The warmest things instantly became necessities. But besides the cold, the children were waiting for the long-awaited snow. Therefore, this month was called nothing but "snow" or "jelly".
