Despite protests from thousands of people, the leadership of the Copenhagen Zoo in February 2014 decided to kill a young and perfectly healthy giraffe named Marius. The remains of the animal were given to be eaten by lions, some of them were later also killed by the zoo staff.

Step 1
As explained in the press service of the Danish capital menagerie, the genetic material of the killed giraffe has already been presented in their zoo. Citing the requirements of the European Association of Zoos and Aquariums (EAZA) regarding animal breeding, the Copenhagen menagerie leadership cited the inadmissibility of inbreeding, or closely related breeding, as the reason for killing Marius.
Step 2
According to the European press, as a result, a young and absolutely healthy giraffe was shot by workers at the Copenhagen menagerie. The only fault of the one and a half year old Marius was that he was born as a result of a closely related cross. The massacre of the giraffe caused a strong public reaction, despite the fact that the management of the menagerie continued to stubbornly refer to the rules established by the European Association of Zoos and Aquariums. In addition, the management of the Danish menagerie said that they did not want to take Marius to any of the 300 zoos operating under the auspices of the EAZA.
Step 3
Many famous people were ready to take an active part in the fate of Marius, in particular, the American promoter Klaus Hjelmback, according to whom one of his friends could buy a giraffe by giving Marius life. If the management of the Danish zoo agreed to Hjelmback's proposal, the one and a half-year-old giraffe would have the opportunity to “live peacefully in the garden in Beverly Hills,” but for some reason the Copenhagen menagerie did not react to this proposal …
Step 4
It is known that the stars of the Russian circus, trainers Askold and Edgard Zapashny, also reported about the desire to buy Marius out. Shortly before the massacre of the animal, the Zapashny brothers sent an official message to the Danish zoo, in which they offered themselves as buyers for the doomed Marius. A copy of the letter was also sent to the Danish embassy in the Russian Federation - the artists asked for help and assistance in negotiations aimed at saving the giraffe, however, this project did not lead to anything.
Step 5
After some time, it became known that the administration of the Jyllands zoo, which is located in the Danish city of Videbek, is preparing to kill another giraffe, since the animal is not suitable for participation in breeding. And a month after the death of Marius, in March 2014, representatives of the Copenhagen Zoo reported the killing of several lions … Two elderly predators were shot along with a pair of ten-month-old lion cubs, according to the leadership of this institution, out of the best intentions - the dead lions belonged to the same pride, they had to be killed for a better life for a young male claiming the role of leader of the pack. It only remains to add that the remains of the giraffe Marius were previously fed to the same lions, which actually repeated his fate.
