September is marked by a variety of colorful and vibrant events in all corners of the world. And although the summer is over, the holidays continue. Among them there are many secular, cultural and religious events. A September vacation can be an unforgettable adventure that has left the memory of visiting one of the world's thousands of autumn holidays.
Italy
On the first Sunday in September, the Historical Regatta takes place on the Grand Canal in Venice. It is divided into two parts. The first is a historic boat parade and the second is a rowing sport. The first such regatta was organized back in 1271 for purely sporting purposes, but modern competitions are held in honor of the Queen of Cyprus Catherine Cornaro, who in 1489 renounced the throne in favor of Venice. At the historic parade, you can see bissons - gondolas that are used only on special occasions. The costumes of the participants reproduce the era of the 15th century. The regatta starts from the Gulf of San Marco and continues up to the Bridge of the Constitution. The sports part of the event starts in the Castella area and ends in Ca'Foscari. The first four crews to arrive will receive a cash prize and red, white, green and blue banners as they reach the finish line. Until 2002, the fourth crew received a live pig, but then it was replaced with a glass one.
China
The Lunar Festival or, as it is also called, the Mid-Autumn Festival takes place in China on the 15th day of the eighth lunar month. Most often, it falls in September. The holiday dates back to the Tang Dynasty. On this day, the Chinese worship the god of the moon. The festival lasts three days, during which the inhabitants of the country, in the light of the moon, eat sweet cakes made of dough made from crushed lotus and sesame seeds, and various fillings: sweet jelly, dates, nuts or red bean paste. The atmosphere is very poetic: candles gleam in the moonlight, fragrant cassia blooms, people recite poetry and sing songs, and also arrange dances in costumes depicting dragons. Lovers pray to the gods for a happy marriage, and parents and children launch flashlights into the night sky.
England
On the third Sunday in September, the Sour Apple Fair takes place in the English city of Egremont. The history of the holiday began in 1267, when Lord Egremont distributed wild apples to the locals. Since then, every year, a parade of carts with sour apples has been held in the city, and they are not eaten, but thrown into the crowd. Live music sounds at the fair, sports competitions are held, and at the end of the event - a grimacing championship. Every inhabitant of Egremont tries to portray the most unusual grimace that would be on his face if he ate a sour apple.
Slovenia
On the third Sunday of the first autumn month, the Cow Ball is held by Lake Bohinj in Slovenia. This event marks the return of livestock to the valley after summer pasture grazing. The owners decorate the animals with wreaths, ribbons and bells. The festival is accompanied by a noisy fair for producers of cheese and other dairy products. Here you can also buy products made of vines and wood. Participants and guests of the festival are invited to take part in folk dances, taste the local cuisine, sawing a log in a lumberjack competition. Locals compete for the best horseshoe. The holiday is noisy and fun and attracts hundreds of tourists from all over the world.
