There are many sights in St. Petersburg, some of them have no historical value, but have artistic and cultural values. These include the so-called "Mosaic Courtyard". A little-known, but bright and unusual landmark of the city is located in the courtyards of ordinary houses. You can watch it for free, you are allowed to take pictures.
The mosaic courtyard is one of the most striking, unusual and famous sights of St. Petersburg in the historical center of the city. It is located at st. Tchaikovsky, 2, it is very easy to find it. The reference point is the Small Academy of Arts - the school of Vladimir Lubenko.
At first glance, it seems that this is an ordinary courtyard of residential buildings, which was decorated with mosaics. In fact, this is not the case!
The "Mosaic Courtyard" is actually called the open-air museum "St. Petersburg - Olympus of Culture". Its appearance is associated with the studio of education by art "Volcano", which appeared in 1984 at the Russian Museum. It was created by the senior researcher of the museum Vladimir Lubenko. In 2000, the Small Academy of Arts appeared on the basis of Vulcan.
In the 80s of the last century, it was decided to decorate the courtyard of the building in which the "Volcano" was located, with mosaics made of smalt, marble, ceramic tiles, porcelain (fragments of cups and plates). The author of the project is Vladimir Lubenko, scandals are associated with his name, but many consider him a genius. The author spent a lot of time and effort on the open-air exhibition (sometimes students helped), the courtyard became a real gift for the Northern Capital.
Why an open-air museum? This is usually the name given to museums whose expositions are located on the street. Can the courtyard be called a museum? Sure! Until the 18th century, this was the name of the collection of objects, later they began to call the buildings in which the exhibits are located.
"Olympus of Culture" is a collection of original exhibits in the open air, they are unique.
Like any museum, the courtyard consists of several “halls” (divided into parts), where you can see different expositions. In one part there are flat images, in the other three-dimensional ones.
Some of the exhibits are very peculiar and it is difficult to understand what the author wants to say. Some, on the contrary, speak for themselves. For example, this exhibit is definitely dedicated to religion, God and people.
Some of the exhibits do not just decorate the courtyard, they are created for recreation. These are real benches!
There is an unusual clock and a musical fountain in the courtyard. He works as usual, but on weekends he dances to music. The composition of the fountain is called "Mother and Child".
It is hard to believe that this wall is dedicated to the history of St. Petersburg. You can look at it for hours and various associations will arise, but not with the creation of a city (there may be exceptions).
You can take pictures in the open-air museum as much as you like. One of the buildings houses a personal exhibition of the author, admission is free, but photography is prohibited. At the exhibition you can see paintings, interior items (very beautiful tables) and other works of the author.
