Therefore, it is not surprising that some citizens are still busy looking for their dead and missing relatives. To find out about the fate of a person who went missing in the war, you need to find a military archive and send a request there.

Step 1
Contact Rosarkhiv - one of the largest archival agencies in Russia. It stores information about the soldiers who died in the course of hostilities. Among the structural subdivisions under his direct supervision is the Russian State Military Historical Archive and the Archive of the Navy. All of their funds are in the public domain. You can familiarize yourself with the available archival materials in a special equipped hall. Those who work on a personal application are entitled to 5 cases and inventories per day. At your request, photocopies and microfilms of documents can be made in the archive.
Step 2
Find information about other military archives on the Internet. The Federal Archival Agency (Rosarkhiv) has its own website where you can find the addresses of the Central Archives of the Russian Defense Ministry, the Military Memorial Center of the Armed Forces and the Central Naval Archives of the Russian Defense Ministry. The site also lists the contact numbers of these military archives, call these numbers and find out the conditions for providing information.
Step 3
Make a request to the Central Archives of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation (TsAMO), located in Podolsk. It contains documents of all military headquarters, formations and units from 1941 to the end of the 80s of the last century. Contact this archive personally if you live near Podolsk.
Step 4
Look for information about a person who did not return from the war in the database of scanned documents on the so-called irrecoverable losses - OBD "Memorial" on the website of this database on the Internet. Type in the appropriate field the available data on the last name, first name, patronymic, year of birth and title of the person. Not all of the fields can be filled in, in this case the search term can be simply expanded. You will see scans of documents where there is a mention of people with such data. On the scan of the document, the name list contains information about the next of kin - wife or parents. This will help you with your search.
