From biography

Denis Dmitrievich Gordeev was born in 1964 in Moscow into the family of an artist who was considered one of the twenty independent creators and who was hardly allowed to see exhibitions in the 70s and 80s of the 20th century. Once, at his exhibition, a wedding portrait was stolen, where he was depicted with his wife Any. On the paternal side, Denis's grandmother was a chemist, and his grandfather was a metallurgical engineer. First he studied at the evening art school, then graduated from the Art Institute, receiving a professional education.

The first elves, trolls, hobbits

D. Gordeev hoped that he would paint pictures that have nothing to do with books. The first book he illustrated was "Tree and Leaf" by J. R. R. Tolkien. He was fascinated by this initial experience. When he read the first volume of The Lord of the Rings, he was curious how he would cope with fairy creatures: hobbits, elves, trolls. So his future brilliant career began to be determined.

Surprisingly different images

Since that time, D. Gordeev has embraced many books with his work, including the legends of the Germanic, Scandinavian peoples, the author's tales of Russian and foreign writers. He portrayed Alexander Nevsky, Gulliver, Nutcracker, Mouse King, Turandot, Boy-star, a simple fisherman, an enchanted princess, three musketeers and D, Artanyan, etc.

Beautiful illustrations

D. Gordeev loves clean colors, light and almost microscopic details. His pictures look realistic. In them one can feel his attitude towards the book not only as a spiritual value, but also as a material one. Buyers appreciate the beauty of his illustrations.

A completely different world

Some of the characters in his paintings are those who cause not only pity, but partly dislike. They are harlequins. The artist has created a whole series of circus performers whose life does not work out, and they are constantly depicted with objects of drunkenness. The look does not sparkle, it is extinct. Neither craft nor life is a joy to them.

Artist's workshop

The illustrator's holy of holies looks creative. Behind the easel, in folders on the shelves, there are archival works and published books. He dislikes many modern covers and illustrations because in most cases they are made with a computer. An experienced illustrator believes that drawing should be done not so much with a brush as with his head. He rarely uses a computer, only for auxiliary purposes.

Continuation of creativity follows

The famous original creator earned an award at the All-Russian competition "The Image of the Book". In 2008 for illustrations to the book "Battle on the Ice" and in 2014 - gift edition "Turandot".

She continues to create and participate in exhibitions. Work gave him the joy of life. The main goal of the artist is not to cease to achieve "the coincidence of the picture and his idea of it."
