One day, two visionary friends Bob Gale and Robert Zemeckis came up with a story about a teenager traveling in a time machine. Many years passed, and fiction turned into one of the legendary American films "Back to the Future".

Step 1
Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale met in the 60s when they were in high school. They dreamed of working at the Dream Factory. Young people stubbornly went to their goal. Zemeckis directed in Hollywood and directed a couple of films based on Gale's scripts. One day in 1980, Bob Gale came to St. Louis to visit his parents. In the basement, he was sorting out old things and saw his father's school photo album. Bob wondered if he and his father would become friends if they were suddenly in the same class. Then the concept of a future scenario about a schoolchild began to crystallize, who is transferred to the past and there gets to know his parents.
Step 2
In the original version of the script, the protagonist was a video pirate and traveled in time using a refrigerator. But the kids could decide that the movie story was true and would start crawling into the fridges. Then it was invented to use the car as a time machine.
Step 3
The details of time travel have been discussed by Zemeckis and Gale for quite some time. It was planned that Marty and Doc would go to a military training ground in the state of Nevada to arrange a nuclear explosion there. Its energy would be sufficient to move. Filming this episode alone would have cost $ 1,000,000, which for the mid-80s was a truly fantastic amount. The idea of a lightning strike turned out to be less expensive. This decision allowed to kill two more birds with one stone: the action would not go outside the town of Hill Valley, and the hours at which the lightning strikes would symbolize Time.
One of the producers of Back to the Future, Steven Spielberg, used ideas about a refrigerator and a nuclear explosion many years later, when the film "Indiana Jones: Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" was filmed.
Step 4
When the script was written, money had to be found for it. The producers refused because the project seemed unprofitable. It was much easier to find investors for a simple youth comedy without distortions of the space-time continuum. Not a single Hollywood film studio agreed to film Back to the Future, citing the dubious idea of the idea. Disney said that the film is indecent, as there is a romantic note between Marty and his mother, when the teenager is in the past. On the other hand, at Columbia Pictures, the film was considered childish, arguing that cinema without eroticism, violence and alcohol would not be successful. Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale rewrote the script at least twice, but there was still no money for the picture and the studio that would agree to shoot it.
Step 5
In 1984, Zemeckis's film "A Romance with a Stone" was a huge success, and then no one could refuse the director, who "suddenly" turned out to be talented. But Zemeckis himself believed that only Spielberg should be the producer, who was initially crazy about the script.
Step 6
To create the atmosphere of the 50s, the artist of the film "Back to the Future" Lawrence Paul had to look at about a thousand photographs and several times to watch dozens of films shot in those years. In many of the scenes, the sets were decorated with authentic details, which enhanced the effect of immersion in the past.
Step 7
For the filming of the film, a whole fake city was built. The facades of the buildings were erected near the Universal Courthouse Square film studio. They had to abandon the idea of filming in any real town, since no one allowed the whole square to be rebuilt in the style of the 50s. First they shot all the scenes of the past, and then the present. The decorations have aged with modern elements, and in the square in front of the clock building, instead of a lawn, an asphalt parking lot has been made.
Step 8
Dr. Brown's home was rented at the Blacker House, a historic property. School scenes were filmed in a real school, which at one time graduated from the founder of the studio "Pixar" John Lasseter and US President Richard Nixon. They found a suitable ballroom for the school ball at Methodist Church right in Hollywood.
Step 9
When filming was completed, George Lucas's Industrial Light & Magic studio created all the special effects for the film in just two months, including the lightning striking the clock and the flight of DeLorean. For the scene where Marty's sister and brother appeared in the photograph due to a changed past, a giant guitar neck was specially designed, and the photograph itself was enlarged several times. Otherwise, in 1985, it was impossible to create a similar effect. A total of 32 visual effects are used in Back to the Future.
