A person could lose the citizenship of the Russian Federation due to various circumstances. But according to the law, for a number of categories of persons who have lost their citizenship, there is an opportunity to restore it.
Instructions
Step 1
Find out which category of former citizens you belong to according to the law. All of them are divided into two main categories - those who lost their citizenship not of their own free will and who made this decision voluntarily. The first category includes, for example, emigrants who lived on the territory of the RSFSR, and who were deprived of their citizenship after leaving the country. Also, the residents of Crimea who lived there until 1954, that is, the annexation of this territory to the Ukrainian SSR, can be attributed to the same type of people.
Step 2
In case of compulsory deprivation of citizenship, prepare documents confirming your residence in the territory of Russia, the RSFSR or Crimea (until 1954). Such a document can be a passport with a residence permit stamp, as well as a certificate from the local archive or municipality that you were registered in their territory. Also, if you changed your last name, you will need to show documents confirming this - a marriage or divorce certificate, as well as a name change. Additionally, you will need a birth certificate. If you have not preserved it, get a copy at the registry office at your place of birth. This document will be issued regardless of your current citizenship. A passport or other identification document with a photo issued by the country of which you are currently a citizen will serve as proof of your identity.
Step 3
Submit the collected documents to the Russian consulate in the country where you currently live. After consideration of your application, a decision will be made to grant you citizenship or to refuse it. Factors such as having a criminal record, reporting false information about yourself when submitting an application and serving in the army of a foreign state can become an obstacle.
Step 4
If you previously renounced citizenship voluntarily, you will have to live in Russia for at least three years, and also confirm that you have official means of subsistence on the territory of this state.
