"Gaza Strip" is a Soviet, and then a Russian rock band, called almost one of the very first punk bands. It was created in the city of Voronezh on December 5, 1987. Its founder was Yuri Klinskikh, the author of songs and music, who later became known under the pseudonym Hoy.
The origins of the name
The name of the team was borrowed from the industrial Levoberezhny district of the city of Voronezh. Due to the abundance of various factories, the sky above this area was always very smoky and the local population jokingly began to call the area the gas sector.
Yuri himself said this about the name of the team: “… well, this is purely a local name in Voronezh, where there was a rock club to which we belonged. He was in a very smoky area, and I called him that - "the gas sector". And we in this club constantly played, and since I lived there nearby in this area, I called the group the same - "Gaza Strip". A purely local name, I didn't think then that we would be so promoted. I thought we were going to play and that would be the end of it …”.
Other team members added that the Palestinian region of the same name, which then became a "hot spot", was a very frequent media coverage at that time. In their opinion, this also influenced the choice of the name for the team.
However, the name was not chosen immediately. Yuri had a list of possible names for the team and he chose it from two dozen possible ones.
Team style
Initially, the songs of Yuri Klinsky were practically descriptions of the life of the very bottom of society, depicting the lifestyle and habits of residents of seedy villages. Moreover, these descriptions were clothed in the form of profanity and jargon. To define the style in which the group worked, Yuri himself came up with the exact name - "collective farm punk".
Probably, the group won its first popularity precisely with its non-standard and original flavor, taken by young people for the manifestation of rebelliousness. The first albums of the team were passed from hand to hand and rewritten on old tape recorders many times. And, despite this, for a long time the group did not perform outside Voronezh, and its members were practically unknown to anyone.
Between June 1989 and April 2000, the team released twelve studio albums, including the rock fairy tale "Kashchei the Immortal" and an album of remixes.
Since 1996, Hoi has revised the style of the band's musical direction and somewhat changed the presentation of the material. The songs of that period were much more serious and deeper, and colloquial and profanity disappear from them. However, this change goes unnoticed, and "Gaza" is still associated with vulgarity by most audiences.
The group existed for thirteen years and broke up after the death of Yuri Klinsky in 2000.
