In world economic policy, from 1949 to this day, the abbreviation NATO is actively used. The full name - North Atlantic Treaty Organization - translates as the North Atlantic Treaty Organization and has an international status. In official sources and the press, it is used in abbreviated form as an abbreviation.
Instructions
Step 1
At the time of its formation on April 4, 1949, NATO had twelve representatives. Among them were the USA, Canada, Great Britain, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Iceland, Belgium, Norway, Denmark, Portugal, Luxembourg. The composition of the organization expanded six times: in 1952 (Greece, Turkey), 1955 (Germany), 1982 (Spain, which does not participate in the NATO military organization), 1999 (Poland, Hungary, Czech Republic), 2004 (Bulgaria, Romania, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Slovenia, Slovakia) and in 2009, when Albania and Croatia were included.
Step 2
Over the years of its existence, the composition changed due to the withdrawal of states twice - in 1966, France left the military organization under NATO (returned in 2009), in 1974 - Greece, but six years later returned to NATO. Today the Organization includes 28 states. The official languages of NATO are English and French. Since 2009, the Secretary General has been the Danish Anders Fogh Rasmussen, who was previously the head of the Danish government from 2001 to 2009.
Step 3
According to Article 4 of the North Atlantic Treaty, the organization was formed as a transatlantic forum, which is designed to conduct consultations on resolving issues that threaten the security of the countries that make up its members. According to the treaty, the Allied States are obliged to provide protection against aggression against any country that is part of this military-political union. NATO's strategic concept also boils down to positioning itself as the basis of stability in the Euro-Atlantic region, active crisis settlement, and a course towards comprehensive partnership with other countries of the Euro-Atlantic region.
Step 4
NATO headquarters is located in Brussels. All decisions are taken unanimously in the presence of all representatives of NATO member states. The supreme body is the NATO Council (North Atlantic Council).
