Horror films are one of the most rated, popular film genres, and the gross receipts from horror films often exceed the income from global high-budget projects. Horror films are very diverse: from thoroughly bloody to subtle psychological ones.
Measuring the degree of "horror" of modern films by the amount of blood spilled or scenes of violence does not seem to be the most objective way. Therefore, it is much more logical to evaluate films in this category according to the effect that watching a picture has, according to a kind of index of "scary".
Bloody horror
One of the most intense and terrifying films of the last five years is the continuation of the story of the Texas maniac "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3D". The film belongs to the category of increased bloodiness and violent scenes. The popularity of the film is mainly ensured by loyal fans - those who have followed the development of events for more than the first film in a row.
The first horror film in the history of cinema is considered to be the film "A Student from Prague", which was released in black and white in 1913.
Mystical horrors
Emily Rose's exorcist horror film Six Demons is able to hold the attention of even a notorious skeptic until the final scene. The film is best known for two facts: the use of real scenes of exorcism and the fact that the film is based on real events, which increases the degree of its creepiness at times.
The sequel of the joint American-Japanese production is also popular: "Call" (as well as "Call-2" and "Call-3"). A tense, overloaded with mysticism horror film about a mysterious cassette and a call following its viewing, which inevitably end with the mystical death of the heroes.
Remakes
Not lagging behind in popularity and box office receipts and remakes, so, the palm tree of leadership among them can be given a remake of the ancient (1981 release) horror film "Evil Dead". Evil Dead: The Black Book will surely delight fans of zombie stories, as such pictures appear on the screen less and less.
The remake of the film "Wii", which was released at the end of January 2014, is also gaining popularity. This is a new reading of Gogol's story, which in many ways is presented as a detective story with elements of healthy humor and a great deal of mysticism. A film in 2D is objectively inferior to its analogue in 3D, where the viewer literally participates in the action, but this does not diminish the artistic merit in the least.
Remakes rarely become the undisputed rental leaders. Their trouble is in an involuntary comparison with the previous film.
Realistic movies
Undoubtedly, "The Mystery of the Dyatlov Pass" is among the leaders in terms of the degree of creepiness. Already real events that took place in the Ural Mountains in the middle of the last century, quite themselves constitute an ideal basis for a horror film. The more creepy is the film, in which real mystical facts are combined with the latest cinematographic technologies. The product turned out to be truly chilling and requires a strong nervous system from the one who decides to watch the film.
