Biography

David Gemmel was born in 1948 in a disadvantaged area of London. He grew up as a very restless child, showing an irreconcilable character and freedom-loving disposition. The main thing that determined David's life was hostile relationship with his stepfather. Apparently, the boy was simply rebelling against the abuse.

At school, he was also known as a rebel, and at the age of 16, David's school years ended - he was expelled for bad behavior. Since then, the independent life of a young man began: the work of an excavator, a bouncer in nightclubs, a driver.

Towards the age of eighteen, Gemmel discovered his talent as a journalist, began working as an intern in one of the London newspapers. Then he became a reporter for three newspapers at once and was quite successful. Having risen to the position of editor, Gemmel began writing his first novel.

This was facilitated by a sad event: David was diagnosed with cancer. He was in a hurry to finish his novel until the moment when death overtakes him. But the diagnosis was wrong. However, some of Gemmel's friends were inclined to think that it was the novel that helped him overcome his illness - all the heroes and everything that happened to them were so lovingly written out. Gemmel's first novel, The Legend, came out in 1984 and became the first book in a successful fantasy cycle.

Writer

Since 1986, Gemmel devoted himself entirely to writing, showing the wonders of working capacity. He seems to be able to write day and night, plunging his characters into incredible adventures and writing extraordinary storylines.

In total, Gemmel wrote several cycles during his writing career. It seems that, having written the book, he did not want to part with the heroes, and therefore continued the journey with them in the following books.

He has works written in the genre of alternative history: "The King of Ghosts", "The Last Sword of Power" about King Arthur, as well as the Greek cycle.

One of the virtues of Gemmel's novels was the masterful description of battle scenes. He skillfully immerses the reader in the events that happen to the heroes, and it is impossible to tear yourself away from reading. Original endings, unexpected plot twists, high moral qualities of the heroes rive attention firmly.

And in each book - the triumph of good over evil, the victory of the common man over injustice. His heroes were not supermen and superpowers, they defeated enemies, rather, thanks to their moral qualities and thanks to the strength of the spirit, rather than the strength of their muscles. This brought them closer to those who enthusiastically read Gemmel's books, and people believed that good will always prevail.

In addition to the recognition of readers, Gemmel's books received critical acclaim: The Legend received the Eiffel Tower Prize, and The Macedonian Lion the Ozone Prize.

Personal life

After his death, David's wife Stella Gemmel completed the final volume of the Fall of Kings Trojan trilogy in 2007 - this is all that is known about the writer's personal life.
