Arthur Asher Miller is an American writer and screenwriter. Winner of the Pulitzer Prize for the play "Death of a Salesman", as well as awards: "Tony", "Emmy", Laurence Olivier and many other awards. Arthur Miller was married from 1956 to 1961 to Hollywood star Marilyn Monroe, becoming her third husband.
Miller has written over thirty plays and sixty screenplays for films.
During the war, Arthur began working as a correspondent. Based on materials collected by Arthur and other military reporters, in 1945 the film "The Story of Private Joe" was shot. It was directed by Ernie Pyle.
Biography facts
Arthur was born in the fall of 1915 in the United States, in the New York area - Harlem, where mostly African Americans lived. He is a Polish Jew by birth. His ancestors came to the United States in search of a better life long before Arthur was born. Mom was doing housework. My father had his own clothing factory for women, which employed hundreds of workers.
Arthur's father was one of the most respected and wealthy people in the United States. This continued until the onset of the economic crisis. The shares in which my father invested almost all of his money burned out. Having lost everything, the family moved to a poor area of Brooklyn, where Arthur was born.
Since childhood, he began to work in order to somehow help the family. In the morning, the boy served bread and then went to school.
After completing his primary education, Miller continued his studies at the University of Michigan, graduating shortly before the war.
Literary career and cinema
Arthur began writing his first works in his student years. The first play was called Not a Villain. He composed it in 1936, and later rewrote it several times, changing the title.
After the end of the war in 1947, Miller published a work called All My Sons. Before that, he had already tried more than once to attract the attention of publishers, but all of his works were rejected. Arthur decided that if this time he was going to fail, he would stop writing and find himself another job. But luck smiled at him. The work has been published. The author received recognition, fame and his first literary prize.
Arthur published his most famous play "Death of a Salesman" in 1949. She was later staged on the Broadway stage. And to this day, it continues to be played in many theaters around the world.
Death of a Salesman has been filmed five times. The first film appeared in 1951 and was awarded the Golden Globe and was also nominated for an Oscar, a British Academy Award, and the Venice Film Festival.
In 1957, a television version of the work was filmed in Argentina. In 1966, the film was again directed in America, directed by Alex Segal.
In 1985, another screen version of the play was released. The main roles were performed by: Dustin Hoffman, Keith Reed, John Malkovich, Stephen Leng. The film was nominated for a Golden Globe, and D. Hoffman won the Golden Globe and Emmy awards.
In 2000, a television version of the work was filmed, where Brian Dennehy played the main role, receiving Golden Globe and Actors Guild awards for her. He also became an Emmy nominee.
The famous playwright and screenwriter passed away in the winter of 2005. In October of the same year, he would have turned ninety years old.
Personal life
Arthur met his first wife Mary Grace Slattery before the war. In 1940 they became husband and wife. In this union, two children were born.
Miller's second wife was Hollywood star Marilyn Monroe. Their marriage lasted five years and ended in divorce in 1961, a year before Monroe's death.
In 1962, Arthur married the photographer and artist Inge Morat. She became his last chosen one, who gave her husband two children. The daughter was named Rebecca, and the son was named Daniel.
