Primitive artists, whose rock paintings have survived to this day, created simple and rather primitive images, similar to children's drawings. Over time, the painting became more realistic. But the features of the ancient fine arts have survived and even formed the basis of a whole trend called primitivism.
Instructions
Step 1
As a trend in painting, primitivism originated in the 19th century. By its nature, it resembles primitive art, which is characterized by a deliberately naive and simplified depiction of people and objects. The paintings of the primitivists are not very realistic, more reminiscent of the work of children. But this is not a blind imitation of a child's drawing, but just a stylized professional painting.
Step 2
Primitivism is often called "naive art", which emphasizes its artistic features. The main features of primitivism are simplicity and extreme generalization of images. Artists working in this style strive to express their ideas with the utmost clarity and spontaneity. The naive images created by primitivists are free from the traditional vision of the world, which is characteristic of realism.
Step 3
The concept of "primitivism" appeared in European culture two centuries ago. It reflects the traditions and representations of the culture of that era, which was considered the highest stage in the development of art. That is why some art historians of the past put a negative meaning into the term “primitivism”, indirectly indicating that this style is a step backward in the general development of culture.
Step 4
Over time, the attitude towards "naive" painting in society and in the art world has changed. The paintings of primitivist artists began to be considered real masterpieces of culture and entered the "golden fund" of world art. The most prominent masters who worked in this style, art critics include the Frenchman Henri Russo, the Georgian Niko Pirosmani (Pirosmanishvili), the American Anna Mary Robertson, the Croat Ivan Generalich.
Step 5
Primitivism in painting is a special vision of the world and a unique presentation of its features. This style is partly close to the creativity of children, partly to the drawings of the mentally ill. But in essence it differs from both the first and the second. Primitivism is characterized by a certain sacredness, symbolism and canonicity, which cannot be found in the drawings of children. In this style, the immediacy of the perception of the world froze, filled with deep cult symbolism.
Step 6
The works of primitivists are optimistic and aimed at the development of the world. The paintings of the artists breathe optimism and affirm life in all its manifestations. There is no such obsession, tension and repetition of images that are characteristic of the drawings of the mentally ill. The most successful paintings of primitivists are distinguished by a fairly high level of artistry and aesthetics.
