In ancient myths and legends, there are stories about various mystical creatures, gods or people with unique abilities. Myths tell of great male heroes who performed glorious feats. However, mythology does not disregard women. So, in ancient legends you can read about female warriors, called Amazons.
The Scythians were nomads who took a fancy to the areas north of the Black Sea. They did not organize a single state, but plundered nearby settlements. Several times the Scythians tried to destroy the Persians, but these attempts were unsuccessful. Women occupied a special place in the military regiments of the Scythians. They participated in battles on an equal basis with men and, even, were military leaders. Historians believe that it was they who became the prototype of the Amazons - female robbers from Greek mythology.
In Greek mythology, Amazons are representatives of a matriarchal society that has chosen the shores of the Black Sea. Legends say that they cut off their right breasts and fantastically shot arrows, killed male children or turned them into slaves. In order not to disappear, the Amazons had sexual contact with the most beautiful men of the nearby peoples. Many Greek mythical heroes dealt with the Amazons: Achilles, Theseus, and Priam. In some literature, you can find evidence that even Alexander the Great met with the queen of the Amazons Mirina, who wanted a child from him.
Excavations that took place on the border of Russia with Kazakhstan revealed the remains of female people, buried together with weapons, dating back to 200-600 BC. Some scientists see these finds as confirmation of the existence of the Amazons. Others may talk about ordinary women who previously took part in battles.
