Richard Tyson was born on February 13, 1961. His hometown is Mobile, Alabama. The actor is a member of the Shriners Paramasonic Society. After high school, from which Richard graduated in 1974, he received a law degree. While still a law student, Tyson realized that he wanted to act in films and appear on television, and went to Hollywood. Early in his career, Richard starred in episodes and appeared in commercials. He also hosted Outlaw Radio in Los Angeles.

Richard's wife is Tracy Kristofferson, producer and actress. She starred in 1985's Thought Confusion, 1991's Night Cyclone, and 1991's A Pair of Aces in Stock: The Poker Three. Their family had a daughter, Maggie Elizabeth. Unfortunately, Tyson and Kristofferson's marriage fell apart in 2017.
