On June 4, 1894, 126 years ago, construction of the symbol of the October Revolution, the cruiser Aurora, began in St. Petersburg. In 1900, the cruiser was launched, and in 1903 it was already put into operation.
Instructions
Step 1
The cruiser "Aurora" was built by the third battleship. The first two such cruisers were named Diana and Pallas. Shipbuilding work became part of a program to equalize the naval forces of the Russian Empire with the German forces.
Step 2
The name "Aurora" was first given to a sailing frigate in 1833. He served in the fleet for 28 years and managed to make two round-the-world voyages, and also participated in the defense of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky during the Crimean War. According to the tradition that has developed since the time of Peter I, the name of the ship was chosen by the emperor. In 1897 Nicholas II was offered the following several names, among which were: "Aurora", "Helion", "Naiad", "Juno" and many others. The Emperor chose the name "Aurora", underlined it in the text and marked it with a pencil under the text.
Step 3
The ceremony of launching the Aurora was held on May 11, 1900. It was attended by Nicholas II with his wife Alexandra. On deck in the honor guard was one of the surviving sailors of the frigate, after whom the new cruiser was named. Konstantin Pilkin was also present, who served as an officer of the watch on the frigate Aurora during the Far East campaign.
Step 4
Aurora took part in the passage of the Second Far Eastern Squadron from the Baltic to the Far East, as well as in the Battle of Tsushima during the Russo-Japanese War.
Step 5
"Aurora" is considered to be a symbol of the Great Russian Revolution, since the assault on the Winter Palace was to begin with its shot. However, this was not done as it is commonly believed. The cruiser was instructed to anchor at the Nikolaevsky bridge, in case the shelling of the Winter Palace, where the members of the provisional government were, began. Aurora was being repaired, but she was moored to the bridge. On October 25 at 21.40 the cruiser was supposed to fire a couple of times with blanks, which meant only a warning: “Attention! Readiness ". However, the cannon of the Peter and Paul Fortress fired the first, and the second shot towards the Winter Palace was fired from the Aurora.
Step 6
In 1941, the cruiser Aurora was to become a monument. But the bloody Great Patriotic War intervened in the course of events. The vessel was shelled and damaged. In July 1944, the ship was sent for repairs, which stretched out over the next four years. The cruiser subsequently housed the training base of the Leningrad Nakhimov School, which later became a branch of the Central Naval Museum.
Step 7
For shooting the movie "Cruiser" Varyag " Aurore "changed the view of the bow and added a dummy pipe. And after repairs made in the summer of 1984, experts began to argue that the cruiser began to have little in common with the original: only a part remained from the old one, which is located above the waterline. The next renovation of the Aurora was carried out in 2014. The cruiser received an updated design and a modernized security system. Aurora returned to its place only in 2016. Today, nine rooms with modern multimedia installations await visitors on board the ship.
