The future filmmaker was born in the capital of Denmark in the spring of 1956. He also spent his childhood and youth there. In the future, it was here that a career in the film industry began. His parents did not belong to the art world: his father and mother worked in the civil service.
The boy was brought up in the spirit of complete freedom, which resulted in expulsion from school: the child could not study within the strict disciplinary framework of the institution. However, this moment gave him more independence.
At the age of 11, Lars directed a mini-cartoon that lasted several minutes on his own. The mother supported her son. It should be noted that his uncle, his mother's brother, was a famous Danish documentary filmmaker. Lars was presented with a personal camera, and he honed his editing skills on old films that his mother brought home from work.
At the age of 12, the boy took part in the film "The Secret Summer", but the acting experience did not make the proper impression. Lars was more interested in the technical process on the other side of the camera.
At the age of 17, Trier attempted to enter the Copenhagen Film School, but failed. However, this did not break him and he became a member of the association of film lovers "Filmgrupp-16". With the help of his uncle, Lars became an editor at the Danish Film Fund. Here he will shoot two short films. In the future, it is these works that will contribute to admission to the film school.
In his youth, Lars Trier was actively looking for his place in life. For a long time, the young man was fully confident that he was a Jew by blood, since his father was half Jewish. He sometimes attended synagogue. Only shortly before his death, from the revelations of his mother, he learned that his father was Fritz Hartmann, a German by birth.
Trier's first wife became the director of children's films Cecilia Holbeck. Soon the family was replenished with two daughters, and after 8 years they separated. By the way, the filmmaker's personal life improved in the process of parting with his first wife. His second life partner is the educator of his youngest daughter. Bente Froege received a marriage proposal when the child was only 3 weeks old. Already in 1997, twin boys were born in the family.
