My father owned several farms and coal mines. The mother was the daughter of a famous and wealthy businessman. The father was 26 years older than his mother, who was already his second wife.
Franklin received an excellent education and aristocratic upbringing. First of all, he was taught to respect people who succeed in their work. Political career
Continuing family traditions, the young lawyer showed interest in political activities. This is partly due to the fact that the twenty-sixth President of the United States, Theodore Roosevelt, was a distant relative of him. After two years at the law firm, Franklin took part in the elections and became a member of the New York State Legislature. By that time, he was already a member of the US Democratic Party. In 1912, the young politician supported the future president Woodrow Wilson in the elections. Then he was offered the post of Deputy Minister of the Sea.
When Roosevelt was 39 years old, he contracted polio and became disabled. From now on, he could only move in a wheelchair. For nearly eight years, Franklin found himself isolated from the political process. But suddenly the Great Depression struck, and he proposed his own program for overcoming the crisis. In the 1932 elections, Roosevelt presented his program of rebuilding the country called the New Deal. The American people believed him. In his future activities, the President-elect demonstrated initiative, courage and determination.
Personal life of the president

In 1905, Franklin married his six-cousin Eleanor. The family turned out to be friendly and large - the couple had six children.
